Will August's Worst Sector Rebound In The Fall?

Banks were the worst performers in the S&P for the month August with investors punishing financials broadly on concerns they would be most harmed if the fragile recovery stalled out all together.

And at any sign that the economy was teetering, jittery investors sold first and asked questions later.

As you can see from the chart below, during August the Bank ETF did little else but march lower.

However, those sellers may have put the cart before the horse.

New data out of China shows that nation’s manufacturing sector rebounded in August; and Australia's economy grew at the fastest pace in three years in the second quarter.

And perhaps most noteworthy, instead of an expected decline in the ISM number here in the US, the data showed factory output increased.

None of these data points even remotely suggest the recovery is stalling out.

How should you play banks now?

I think we see people get back to work after Labor Day, says Doug Sipkin of Ticonderoga. And a pick up in activity should benefit the space broadly. My favorite name in the space is Lazard.

I’d also look at Greenhill , adds Jon Najarian.

I’m still long Goldman and expect the early July low of $129.5 will be support, says Joe Terranova.

I’m long BofA, Citi and JPMorgan , adds Steve Grasso, but I also think they’re still facing headwinds.

In this space, I’d stay away from pure equity mangers such as Janusor Schwab , says Brian Kelly.
