Big Changes In Big Tech?

Again, traders have their plates full with two new developments that could change the tech landscape. What must you know?

Microsoft

Microsoft is making waves with a one-two punch, first a dividend increase and then bond sale.

Bonds: Despite $37 billion on the balance sheet Microsoft will issue up to $6 billion in bonds due in three years, five years, 10 years and 30 years – they are for general corporate purposes, including working capital, capital expenditures, share buybacks and acquisitions

Dividends: Microsoft will increase its dividend by 23 percent to 16 cents per share –the company’s first increase in two years. Because the stock has been stuck in a rut for several years, shareholders have been pressuring the company to distribute some of that cash on its balance sheet.

In the wake of Microsoft’s dividend announcement, tech companies now rank fifth in dividend payments on the S&P 500 -- surpassing financials -- with Microsoft now the ninth-largest payer on the index.

What should you make of it?

Research In Motion

Research In Motion is stealing the spotlight in an attempt to recapture its dominance in the gadget world.

According to published reports the BlackBerry maker intends to debut a new tablet next week dubbed the ‘BlackPad.’

RIM recently claimed the www.blackpad.com domain name, fueling the speculation.

The device will have a 7-inch touchscreen, one or two cameras and Bluetooth and broadband connections. It will only be able to connect to cellular networks through a BlackBerry smartphone. Also RIM will use a completely new operating system built by QNX Software Systems, the report said.
