Since the advent of indoor plumbing in the late 19th century, Americans have had water in their homes at little or no cost. So it must have seemed like commercial suicide when bottled water was introduced.
So much for conventional thinking: water now accounts for almost 29 percent of the United States beverage market. Consumption is down slightly because of the recession, but trends come and go and water is forever.
