The Right Time To Go Long , Oil?

If you’re a trader you know that timing is everything. And Joe Terranova says the time to get long oil is now.

That may seem counterintuitive considering the spot price of crude erased gains to close in negative territory on Tuesday – as you can see from this chart.

The downward momentum was generated by a string of variables including consumer confidence hitting its weakest levels since February and reports that data out Wednesday will show demand for gasoline declined for the fifth time in six weeks.

If nothing else, crude has been trapped in a range for months bouncing between $70 and $80. Nonetheless Joe Terranova thinks investors should get long.

Why?

"Fundamentally around October 1st you get the switchover from gasoline to distillate which is essentially heating oil," Terranova says. "There's far more industrial demand for heating oil than there is for gasoline."

"On top of that, last year at this time we also had a sideways energy market and then the chase for performance began. I think that could happen again. "

If you're looking for other energy trades Stephen Weiss, author of The Billion Dollar Mistake tells the desk "I like nat gas as a contrarian play."
