Big Developments In The Energy Trade

Tuesday, 12 Oct 2010 | 6:15 PM ET

Investors are digesting some big - if not all together unexpected – developments in the energy sector.

The Obama administration on Tuesday lifted its ban on U.S. deepwater drilling weeks ahead of its November 30 deadline.

The Interior Department said drilling can resume once companies comply with new drilling rules and show they have adequate blowout containment resources.

Every rig will have to be inspected before drilling begins and operators' chief executives will have to certify that each project has met all requirements.

Offshore Drillers Still to Feel Pain
The Obama administration lifted the moratorium on deep water drilling today. Insight with Kurt Hallead, RBC Capital Markets oil services analyst.

"My sense is we will have permits approved by the end of the year," Michael Bromwich, head of Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management told reporters on a conference call.

What’s the trade?

I think the stock that benefits most from the ban lifting is Transocean , says RBC analyst Kurt Hallead. It generates 20-25% of revenues out of the deep water of the Gulf of Mexico.

In the space I like Seadrill and Weatherford, says Tim Seymour.

I’m a buyer of land drillers such as Pioneer Natural Resources, says Brian Kelly.
