Options Action: Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold

After a 55 percent run in just three months, mining giant Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold hit a new high Thursday.

With the company scheduled to report third-quarter earnings on Oct. 21, some may be interested in cashing out now. In Wednesday's "Options Action," Mike Khouw of Cantor Fitzgerald explained how to do just that using options.

"If you think this stock's about to take a breather, one thing you could do is look to protect some of the short-term downside while maintaining a long position," Khouw said, like with a 1 by 2 put spread. In other words, buying 1 put and selling 2 puts.
