US Stocks Up More Than 10% In Two Months

US stocks continued to trend higher in October, following a strong performance in September. In the past two months, all three major averages are up more than 10 percent.

Here is a look at how stocks have traded so far in October.

Based on Wednesday, October 27, closing levels:

  • The Dow is up 338.23 points or 3.14% for the month, and up for the 2nd consecutive month
  • The S&P is up 41.25 points or 3.61% for the month, and up for the 2nd consecutive month
  • The NASDAQ Composite is up 134.64 points or 5.68% for the month, and up for the 2nd consecutive month

Best October Since:

  • The Dow is on track to its best October since 2006 when it rose 3.44%
  • The S&P is on track to its best October since 2003 when it rose 5.5%
  • The NASDAQ Composite is on track to its best October since 2007 when it rose 5.8%

Best Monthly Percent Gain Since:

  • The Dow is on track to its best monthly percent gain since September 2010 when it rose 7.72%
  • The S&P is on track to its best monthly percent gain since September 2010 when it rose 8.76%
  • The NASDAQ Composite is on track to its best monthly percent gain since September 2010 when it rose 12.04%

2-Month (September + October) Percent Gain:

  • The Dow is currently up 11.1% in the past two-months, tracking for its best (Sept + Oct) percent gain since 1998 when it rose 13.97%
  • The S&P is currently up 12.69% in the past two-months, tracking for its best (Sept + Oct) percent gain since 1998 when it rose 14.74%
  • The NASDAQ is currently up 18.41% in the past two-months, tracking for its best (Sept + Oct) percent gain since 1982 when it rose 19.65%

Historical October Gains:

  • On average the Dow has gained 0.21% during October, up 59% of the time (Best October was in 1982 when it rose 10.65% and Worst October was in 1987 when it fell 23.22%)
  • On average the S&P has gained 0.25% during October, up 59% of the time (Best October was in 1974 when it rose 16.3% and Worst October was in 1987 when it fell 21.76%)
  • On average the NASDAQ Composite has gained 0.21% during October, up 51% of the time (Best October was in 1974 when it rose 17.17% and Worst October was in 1987 when it fell 27.23%)

Yet the historical average returns during October increases when September has been a positive month·

  • On average the Dow increased 1.46% during October when September was positive, Up 64% of the time
  • On average the S&P increased 1.77% during October when September was positive, Up 67% of the time
  • On average the NASDAQ Composite increased 0.99% during October when September has was positive, Up 48% of the time.
