Six of the top-grossing movies this year have been 3-D films, Dreamworks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told CNBC Friday.
“For the most part, 3-D has been a spectacular success,” said Katzenberg, who is one of the major proponents of the new technology in the film industry.
Katzenberg spoke to CNBC on Royal Caribbean’sAllure of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship.
Royal Caribbean and Dreamworks have just launched the Dreamworks Experience family cruise, which means that in addition to a trip's usual amenities, passengers can interact with performers dressed as characters in Dreamworks films, such as Shrek and the Kung Fu Panda.
The studio’s 3-D Megaminds animated films, with the voices of Will Ferrell and Tina Fey, has led the box office for the last two weekends.
Katzenberg acknowledged that 3-D movies don’t always thrill audiences. “This was the beginning of a very new way to experience movies in movie theaters,” he said.
“I think there’s a little bit of trial and error that has gone on.”
