Trading Possible Community Health-Tenet Deal

Community Health Systems, the largest listed U.S. hospital company, has offered to buy smaller rival Tenet Healthcare Corp for $3.3 billion, creating the country's largest hospital chain.

The offer is certainly interesting to the "Fast Money" traders.

Including debt, the offer is valued at some $7.3 billion, Community Healthcare said in a statement announcing its unsolicited bid.

Community Healthcare is offering $5.00 a share in cash and $1.00 per share in its own common stock for Tenet, an offer that it said was a 40-percent premium over Tenet's Thursday closing price. Following the news, shares of Tenet traded above the offer price, which Metropolitan Capital Advisors' Karen Finerman said indicates that another bidder could come in or CYH would have to raise its bid.

If it goes through, the deal would create a company with $22 billion in annual revenue, owning or operating 176 hospitals in 30 U.S. states. But Community Healthcare said in a statement that Tenet had rejected its initial advances on Dec. 6, prompting the bidder to re-submit its offer on Thursday.

"This is symptomatic of a no-growth sector," said author Stephen Weiss, adding that many because many health care companies can't grow on their own, they're consolidating. "We saw it in big cap pharma and we're seeing it here."

What's the Trade?

Brian Kelly, founder of Kanundrum Capital, said that because this is just an offer and not a deal, there's little risk in picking up Tenet now. Finerman also thinks Tenet is interesting here.
