Is Turmoil Lurking Just Beneath The Surface?

Just when you thought it was safe to go into the water – new signs are emerging that turmoil may lurk just below the surface.

Earlier in the session you could almost hear bulls breathe a collective sigh of relief after China's moves to curb inflation did not include an interest rate hike.

They took it to mean that China's "foot is still firmly on the gas pedal," says Burt White, managing director and chief investment officer in a Reuters interview.

However, by the close, the market action was anything but bullish. A late selloff ended with the S&P closing on session lows.

I think the trade is all about commodities and it comes on Tuesday afternoon, says Joe Terranova. I want to see if they can hold Monday’s gains. I don’t think they do and I’d play it short gold.

I’m with Joe, says Guy Adami. I suspect the path of least resistance is lower. The S&P had every reason to close up 15-handles but it didn't. Also it’s Monday and mutual fund money typically flows into the market on Monday; yet the market couldn’t hold onto gains.

If you have to have a problem - the numbers out of China are the kind of problem you’d want to have, counters Karen Finerman. Yes, China told us its economy is too hot but that’s much better than too cold. I remain bullish.

I agree that the news out of China was positive, says Brian Kelly. I’m bullish gold as well as the whole commodities tape.

I’m bullish China too, says Stephen Weiss. I equate long China to getting long ahead the industrial revolution here in the US 100 years ago.

I don’t think China has the tools to control inflation, says David Riedel of Riedel research in a live interview. I suspect the inflation issue comes home to roost.

OBAMACARE IN INTENSIVE CARE?

The health care sector experienced a mid-day pop Monday after a judge ruled against Obama's health care law in a Virginia court; first major ruling against the law.

The key issue here is whether the federal law's requirement that citizens buy health insurance or pay a penalty is constitutional.

What’s the trade?

If Obamacare is repealed it should reduce costs to companies, says Brian Kelly.

Developments make me cautious because it introduces uncertainty into the entire space, says Joe Terranova.

If you want to trade the space, I’d look at medical records company such as Cerner , says Guy Adami. No matter what happens they should benefit as the industry digitizes records.

RETURN TO SENDER: NETFLIX

Check out the sharp move lower in Netflix on Monday -the high flyer sunk after the CEO of Time Warner told the New York Times that the days of Netflix's cheap content deals are over.

What’s the trade?

I think the stock has shown it’s hand, says Guy Adami. I’m looking for it to trade down to $170.

I agree that momentum has changed in this stock, adds Joe Terranova. I wouldn’t go short but I think anyone who’s long should buy protection.
