As private equity circles the nutrition sector, Herbalife traded near a 52-week high on Tuesday.

Private equity is attracted to this space, said CEO Michael Johnson, because companies like Herbalife provide products that help counter the megatrends of unhealthy lifestyles and weight gain.

Mostly an emerging market story, Herbalife disappointed investors when it reported a slowdown in North America. Johnson said it's picking up in different segments, though. The non-Spanish speaking market has had very aggressive growth this year and the Spanish speaking market is poised for a comeback, too. This typically happens where we see lots of growth, it slows down and the picks back up again, he explained.

Herbalife is also growing in China. Johnson said his company is being very cautious about how they're doing business in the People's Republic. He explained that they're working with the Chinese government to create a "solid foundation" for future growth.
