Pro: Investors Missing Two Catalysts for Goldman

Shares of Goldman Sachs traded lower ahead of the firm’s earnings release Wednesday before the bell.

Investors were troubled by results from rival Citigroup, which showed fixed-income revenue alone dropped 58 percent from the third quarter.

But Sandler O'Neill analyst Jeff Harte thinks investors are looking at the wrong thing.

"I’m not sure we’re going to see results out of Goldman that are much better than Citi," says Harte during a live interview on CNBC's Fast Money. But focussing on the past quarter, he says would be a mistake.

“We know it’s been a tough trading environment and the question is not how bad was the fourth quarter. Instead Harte says the question is, "how good can the first quarter be?"

Harte thinks investors are underestimating two things with Goldman. They follow:
1) How well they will adapt to economic growth and a stronger capital markets environment

and

2) What happens when they start buying back stock.

”I think they can buy back $2 billion a quarter pretty easily. That’s a big size buyer in the market,” he says.

Harte sounds pretty bullish, but don't dive into Goldman head first. Instead Harte suggests wading into this stock strategically.

”I think coming out of the first quarter Goldman will be up a lot but I don’t necessarily think (gains) will be coming tomorrow.”

Brian Kelly feels the same. On the Halftime Report he said, "I'm not sure there's a market read-thru from Citi for the other financials. I'm positive on Goldman as well as Morgan Stanley."
