Charts Signal Energy Sell-Off Now, S&P 1400 Later

Sorry Doug Kass but your prediction that stocks end 2011 at the same levels as 2010 doesn't fly with Oppenheimer's Carter Worth.

In a live interview he tells the Fast Money traders he expects stocks will climb to 1400 by year's end. That's right 1400.

Where does he get that number?

Worth explains that 1220 is a key level on the S&P - "it's a level to which we rallied and then the flash crash occurred," says Worth. "It's also the level where the market failed after QE2."

In other words it's the level where we've hit our heads, twice.

But the third time we didn't hit our heads - we broke through and as a result what was resistance becomes support.

"1220 becomes the baseline," says Worth. "I'm now taking the all time high of 1575 from the autumn of 2007 and splitting the difference."

That's 1400.

Sounds rather arbitrary but it's not. Worth says 1400 represents 3 things:
- the midpoint between 1220 and the all time high
- a 15% breakout from the 1220 level - a standard measuring objective for a breakout
- it's where considerable supply comes into play

But if you're bearish, you may have your day in the sun, yet.

Worth also says when looking at the charts of the Energy ETF juxtaposed against the Consumer Discretionary ETF it looks as if "the spread is getting to be a bit much."

In other words he thinks energy is due for a pullback.

Get all the details and see the charts Worth used in his analysis. Watch the video now!
