Nasdaq OMX Group CEO: All IPOs Created Equal

Wednesday, 2 Feb 2011 | 1:19 PM ET

Nasdaq OMX Group's quarterly profit and revenue beat expectations on Wednesday. The transatlantic exchange operator said its fourth-quarter earnings more than tripled with the help of a one-time tax boost and a growing U.S. options market share.

"The key thing is we're seeing money come back into the equity marketplace," said Robert Greifeld, CEO of Nasdaq OMX Group . "We're having natural investors, natural buyers come into the marketplace. That portends very good things."

Greifeld Speaks Out
Shares of NASDAQ-OMX Group are up nearly 4 percent, with Bob Greifeld, NASDAQ CEO.

Nasdaq shares are up 30 percent since the beginning of the fourth quarter, but they remain at only half the value of the highs reached before the financial crisis in 2007.

Despite a report indicating otherwise, Greifeld said Nasdaq OMX Group is not seeking to sell any stakes in any of its options business. With 31 percent marketshare, the options business was the leading market in the U.S. during the fourth-quarter, he noted. Greifeld said he's "very happy" with the asset and intends to keep it.

Greifeld also answered criticism regarding Chinese initial public offerings. Some investors, including Kanundrum Capital's Brian Kelly, see a disparity between when a Chinese company and an U.S. company IPOs. But Greifeld explained that the standards and procedures for all IPOs are identical because every one is regulated by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.

After the broadcast we talked a little more with Greifeld. Check out what he told us in this web exclusive video.
