Halftime—Jon Najarian: Unusual Options Activity In This Stock

Tuesday, 15 Feb 2011 | 1:14 PM ET

On Tuesday, Jon Najarian spotted some unusual options activity in Newell Rubbermaid.

In print after print, Najarian said someone bought thousands of Newell Rubbermaid options contracts. The stock was down at the time. However, being as the options are being bought at the 20 strike, Najarian thinks the stock could soon push through that level.

Based in Atlanta, Newell Rubbermaid designs and manufactures consumer and commercial products. It is best known, however, for its food storage containers.

DELL-ADVANCED MICRO DEVICES DEAL COMING?

The market is a buzz about a possible merger between Dell and Advanced Micro Devices.

In the options market on Monday, Dell popped up in the context of active Advanced Micro Devices calls on a possible takeout. Dell's stock traded up on the rumor, but neither company would comment on whether a deal is in the works, Najarian said on Tuesday.

Advanced Micro Devices shares traded higher than where it was prior to the rumor, noted Najarian. Therefore, it's worth watching Dell, which will report earnings after Tuesday's close. If a trading halt is put on AMD after the bell, Najarian said it would imply there is news coming and it could be related to Dell.

Patty Edwards, chief investment officer at Trutina Financial thinks a merger could be interesting. For the most part, AMD sells its products to schools and governments, which are cutting back on spending. A merger might help, but Edwards said it's not enough to get her interested in investing here.
