Market Pro: 3 Reasons Apple Remains #1 With iPad 2

Thursday, 10 Mar 2011 | 6:46 PM ET

Apple will kick off sales of its new iPad on Friday. Consumers can start buying the iPad 2 on Apple's Web site at 4 a.m. ET on Friday while customers who want to purchase it in a store will have to wait until 5 p.m., Apple said.

The launch of Apple's tablet computer is highly anticipated by many. Collin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Financial, said there are three reasons the device will keep Apple at #1.

Take Your Position: iPad 2
Three reasons iPad 2 can outlast competitors, with Colin Gillis, BGC Financial.

First, Apple has pricing power — the introductary price for the iPad 2 is $499, Gillis said. The tech giant is able to get that inflated price because it's the largest buyer of components for tablets. So Gillis said it's able to get the best prices from suppliers. They also design their own processing chips. Plus, its 320 Apple stores allow them to avoid paying a mark-up.

Second, Apple has 65,000 applications already build for the iPad, Gillis said. Meanwhile, Google

has just 100 apps built. Also, there's no equivalent to iTunes. Apple's ecosystem is "best in class," Gillis said.

Finally, Apple has great market penetration. Gillis said iPad sales have been strong with the device accounting for roughly 5 percent of PC sales. He thinks there is ample room for Apple to continue to drive sales to PC users.
