China's massive investment in recent years has taken it to the top of the solar energy industry and is in the process of becoming a major player in wind. Brazil is a production leader in biofuels, thanks to a decades-old ethanol sugar-cane program, while Israel is redirecting much of its IT resources into cleantech.
The U.S. was an early leader in many areas, but has since slipped a bit. Some say cleantech could be the nest Internet and that the U.S. needs to exploit its considerable expertise to be No. 1.
