Halftime: With Shares Down, Is RIM A Buy?

Research In Motion shares fell on Thursday after its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet received poor reviews.

Walt Mossberg, author of a widely read column on technology, wrote in The Wall Street Journal that the PlayBook doesn't run many of the applications the BlackBerry runs. The PlayBook's pricing is basically the same as Apple's iPad, he noted.

To Patty Edwards, it seems RIM rushed the device to the market.

"Retailing 101 is, if you don't have the hot item, you have to put it at a discount and they do not have the hot item," said Edwards, chief investment officer at Trutina Financial. "Something doesn't smell right there right now. I think there's a little bit more desperation going on than we're actually hearing about."

Stuart Frankel's Steve Grasso has long been negative on RIM. Should the stock close above $53.23, though, he thinks investors can nibble at it. If it closes below that level, he would stay away.

"This might be interesting for a trade," Drakon Capital's Guy Adami said of RIMM. "Everything sets up for a trade and all the negativity in RIMM and given the sell-off we've seen over the last couple months, this might be the opportunity we've been waiting for."
