For many Americans, hitting the road in the summer is a celebrated annual event. Piling people and possessions into the family vehicle can be an adventure. For some, it's also been a cost-saving alternative to airline travel.

These days, budget-conscious travelers are being challenged by sky-high gasoline prices (over $4 dollars a gallon in many states and pushing $5 in a few others).
