After June Swoon, Fireworks in July?

July ranks as the best month of the third quarter for the Dow and S&P 500, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac. On the other hand, it marks the start of the worst four months of the year for the NASDAQ.

In the past eleven years, the Dow and S&P 500 have averaged a return of 1.24 percent and 0.16 percent, respectively, while the NASDAQ Composite has posted a loss of -0.45 percent.

The table below highlights the Dow's performance in July against its returns in other months. Since 2000, July has been the index’s fifth best month:


Among the major S&P 500 sectors, five out of ten have averaged a gain in July during the past eleven years, with financial, material and industrial stocks taking the lead.


Historic Performance in July

Dow since 1896:

  • On average, the Dow has gained 1.37 percent during July
  • Up 62 percent of the time in July, and Down 38 percent of the time
  • The best July was in 1932, when it rose 25.79 percent
  • The worst July was in 1903, when it fell -14.08 percent
  • July on average ranks as the second best month out of the year for the Dow
  • On average, the Dow has gained 1.72 percent during July when June has been a negative month, up 63 percent of the time

S&P since 1928:

  • On average, the S&P has gained 1.55 percent during July
  • Up 57 percent of the time in July, and Down 43 percent of the time
  • The best July was in 1932, when it rose 36.12 percent
  • The worst July was in 1934, when it fell -11.52 percent
  • July on average ranks as the best month out of the year for the S&P
  • On average, the S&P has gained 1.55 percent during July when June has been a negative month, up 56 percent of the time

NASDAQ Composite since 1971:

  • On average, the NASDAQ Composite has gained 0.03 percent during July
  • Up 50 percent of the time in July
  • The best July was in 1997, when it rose 10.53 percent
  • The worst July was in 2002, when it fell -9.22 percent
  • July on average ranks as the second worst month out of the year for the NASDAQ
  • On average, the NASDAQ has gained 0.11 percent during July when June has been a negative month, up 53 percent of the time
