Halftime: Trading Hurricane Irene

With Hurricane Irene barreling towards the US Eastern Seaboard, the Fast traders turned their attention to the stormy weather and how to trade it Thursday.

Jon Najarian said we would watch stocks like Briggs & Stratton .

“This is one of those emergency power plays and certainly people might be prompted to go get something like that,” he said.

He also noted that the space shot up after the earthquake. “So imagine what a hurricane might do.”

Steve Grasso had his eye on the refiners, which he said usually pop going into a hurricane. But he urged caution since this storm is heading towards the eastern seaboard and not the gulf. He said as long as the WTI-Brent spread and rig counts stayed in tact, you could trade the refiners “longer haul.”

But Guy Adami scoffed at any trading being done off the hurricane, and said he's never met anybody who has successfully been able to trade natural disasters.

“Typically you get just as buried in the trade as you do in the hurricane." he said.
