Fans vs. Facebook: User-Generated Protests

Facebook, the most visited website in the world, has become the new social status quo for people in an increasingly digital world. Facebook currently has more than 750 millon users who spend over 700 billion minutes per month on the site, leading major firms such as Microsoft and Goldman Sachs to invest in the company which, by some estimates, has been valued at more than $100 billion. However, throughout Facebook’s existence, the site has been heavily criticized by its members for changes to its user interface, which are often dramatic and come as a surprise to people who use the Facebook on a daily basis. These changes often require users to re-learn certain aspects of the site, which can be jarring and cause a range of negative responses. Most recently, Facebook modified the appearance of its “News Feed,” which displays the recent activity of a member’s friends on the site. Birthday reminders, the way photos are displayed, friend request notifications, and even email settings were altered in the past week, causing an intense backlash from users angry at the shift.The Facebook group “We Hate The New Facebook, so STOP CHANGING IT!!!” has more than 1.5 million members, who have filled the group’s discussion board with comments ranging from “I hate this new format. Please go back to the way it was,” to “If it ain't broke....,” as well as members threatening to cancel their memberships.For a company whose value is derived mostly from its vast and highly involved membership, Facebook has developed a poor record for implementing changes and alienating portions of its user base. However, with the growth of social networking rivals such as Google+ and Twitter, Facebook is faced with increasing pressure to continually innovate and maintain its place as an industry leader in the social network space.Aside from voicing their discontent on Facebook itself, many users have taken to the Internet and produced witty, user-generated responses to Facebook’s changes, in the form of satirical and critical images.
