After college, Robert Spiegel went into the family business. He learned the petroleum business from the ground up, starting out pumping gas at several gas stations. Then he drove trucks, delivering fuel oil, motor oil, kerosene and gasoline. He was also responsible for performing regular maintenance on the trucks, oil changes and tire rotations. Robert learned commercial sales, calling on farms, construction companies, truck fleets and gas stations. And to gain management skills, he ran a motor oil division of Spiegel and Sons for 15 years. Finally, he took on all purchasing and sales for SOS Fuels. Robert learned on the job, and by speaking with other professionals, how to hedge petroleum products and run a price protection program for his customers.
