2011 Top S&P Stocks: No. 24 Philip Morris International
Online Producer
Philip Morris International experienced strong stock growth in 2011, up 28 percent year to date, but investors might want to wait for a price opportunity.
As part of the “Fast Money” countdown of the 25 top-performing S&P stocks of 2011, trader Patty Edwards on Tuesday said PM was a stellar pick.
“If you’ve got it today, I would continue to hold on to it,” she said. “I would wait for a pullback to buy it.”
The tobacco company counts among its roster of cigarettes such well-known brands as Marlboro, Parliament and Virginia Slims. Its stock was priced at $74 per share in midday trading.
Edwards noted three positive factors:
- PM is “the industry leader as far as cash-flow margins.”
- It has no U.S. exposure.
- The company provides exposure to consumers in emerging markets.
“I think that is just a trifecta of something I want to own,” she said.

Investment pro Brian Kelly agreed.
“This is like Apple with a dividend,” he said. “Once you try their product, you tend to stay in their ecosystem.”
