Sources tell CNBC, GM engineers are zeroing in on a fix for Chevy Volt batteries that will include re-enforcing the battery pack. The solution will also likely involve keeping the coolant from leaking in extreme crashes.

The possible fix still needs to be finalized, but we're told GM engineers are confident they are close to solutions that will prevent fires in Volt batteries put through extreme crashes.

Earlier this week a GM spokesperson said GM engineers are working with federal investigators to determine the exact cause of the Volt battery fires. GM has maintained a fix for the Volt battery pack may take some time to finalize.
