Again, Carl Icahn is agitating to unlock shareholder value, this time by demanding CVR Energy put itself up for sale.

Icahn, CVR's biggest shareholder with a 14.54 percent stake, said in a regulatory filing there were three or four possible buyers who could benefit from a deal with CVR Energy.

"Shareholders would be better served if (CVR Energy) commenced a process to put itself up for sale, rather than pursue the limited initiatives announced by the (company)," said Icahn, who had picked up the stake in CVR barely a month ago.

Icahn Wants CVR Energy to Sell
Legendary investor, explains why he is calling for the sale of CVR Energy. Icahn has a 14.5% stake in CVI. The Fast Money crew with the play on the sale, and options activity.

And in a live interview on CNBC, Ichan explains that as a small refinery he thinks the fortunes of CVR are too closely tied to the crack spread. And Icahn tells us, “I don’t know how long the crack spread will favor a small refinery like this – I think the value is much greater to a larger refiner.”

Of course that begs the question, who might want to acquire CVR.

Although Icahn wouldn’t reveal any names, top energy trade Joe Terranova thinks Valero and Marathon could be possible buyers.

Of course, that’s purely speculation on Terranova's part. All Icahn would say is, “We’re studying the situation.”
