Directed by Oliver Stone, and starring Charlie Sheen, “Platoon” tells the story of a young recruit in Vietnam. In addition to best picture, the movie took home three other Oscars, including best director, among its eight nominations.

The film had a limited opening in six theaters in December 1986, and then opened to a wide release on Feb. 6, 1987. Coincidence or not, Oscar nominations were announced four days later.
