Ron Paul: GOP Race Needs to 'Drag Out'
By: GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul is not ready to throw in the towel and doesn’t think any of his competitors should be pressured to do so either, he told CNBC Thursday.
Rep. Paul was responding to a recent Washington Post article that said Mitt Romneysupporters were saying it was time for Rick Santorum to drop out of the race.
“I thought this was a democracy,” Paul said. “Why should they make that assumption? Maybe a good debate is what we need. Maybe we need more debates. Maybe we need this to drag out a bit.”
Paul believes more debates are necessary because “we haven’t solved our problems yet.”
The congressman from Texas touted himself as the fiscal conservative of the group, and reiterated his argument that Rick Santorum was a “fake conservative” who hasn’t earned the right to condemn Romney as not conservative enough.
“He ought to be looking to his own record and explain why he voted for so much big government,” he said.
Paul also weighed in on Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget proposal, telling CNBC he doesn’t think it cuts enough.
“I don’t think that budget reflects a concern about spending because it doesn’t even talk about close to balancing the budget for 30 years,” he said. “I don’t think that’s a sincere attempt or concern about how serious our problem is.”
Ryan’s budget calls for spending cuts of more than $5 trillion and deficit reduction of more than $3 trillion over 10 years. It also includes a $49 billion revenue increase for 2012.
