With mega-millions fever sweeping the nation, we thought it seemed appropriate to look at something we call Lottery Ticket trades – stock plays that involve higher risk but offer higher rewards.
If you can stomach the risk, our gang has some ideas.
GT Advanced Technology
Zach Karabell sees this trade almost as a binary event.
“GT makes silicon wafers for LED and solar,” he explains. “The solar market has been terrible but the LED market should become profound.
"This stock will either go up a whole lot or down a whole lot,” he says, depending on whether the solar weakness or LED strength prevails.
(At the time of writing, this company had a market cap of $992 million.)
“This could go big or not at all,” says Patty Edwards of the beleagured retailer.
Edwards thinks it’s a good sign that private equity has reportedly made bids for Talbots . “This is a company that’s been getting offers and they’re rejecting them all. I take it as a sign that management thinks they can turn the company around," she reveals.
"From what I’m seeing in the stores, maybe they can. But make no mistake, this is a wing and a prayer trade,” she adds.
(At the time of writing, this company had a market cap of $214 million)
"4 years ago this stock was trading $178,” says Dennis Gartman. “Now it’s trading $3. Dryships declined dramatically.”
And Gartman thinks that sharp decline presents opportunity.
“I think there will be a rebound globally in economic circumstances,” he says. Fundamentally that’s good for shipping.
“And we’ve had a lot of ships come on stream in the last 3 years. That’s driven dry bulk rates lower but I think we’ve seen the end of that.
And technically he likes the stock too.
“It’s not making new lows. It’s holding and going higher on better volume.” All told, “that’s a good trade.”
(At the time of writing, this stock had a market cap of $1.4 billion.)
“I own this one,” says Steve Grasso.
Although he didn’t tell us anymore about the stock we can tell you that ZaZa Energy was formerly Toreador Resources Corporation, and is engaged in the development of two resource basins located in Texas, United States and Paris, France. The Company’s portfolio consisting of three areas: the Eagle Ford core and the Eagle Ford/Woodbine resource plays in Texas, and the Paris Basin in France, with a total of approximately 435,000 net acres.”
