Investors who gobbled up shares of Monster Beverage on Monday found themselves struggling to get the bad taste out of their mouths.

By the end of the session, Monster had given up 28% gains and then some after Coca-Cola refuted a report in the Wall Street Journal, and said it is not in talks to acquire the energy drink maker.

Speculation certainly seemed to make sense; according to Street chatter Coke and Monster had held talks last year that did not result in a transaction.

A deal would have “given Coke a new avenue when sales of traditional soft drinks have stagnated,” the Journal said.

But officially Coke said no deal, “At this time, we are not in discussions to acquire the Monster Beverage Corp.”

Always on the prowl for a fast money trade, Jon Najarian regrets not trading skeptically. “I wish I had the good sense to get short,” Najarian says. “The news seemed to be compelling and made sense.”
