Only The Paranoid Survive by Andrew S. Grove

Blackberry maker Research in Motion is a classic example of a company whose co-CEOs could have learned a thing or two from legendary Intel CEO Andy Grove's classic, "Only the Paranoid Survive."

I was first turned onto it a few months ago by Jim Cramer, who suggested (no — make that implored) that I read it. He thought it might help hone my skills on spotting companies that misread what Grove calls a “strategic inflection point” — something that can hit a company when it least expects it.

The beauty of the book is by using Intel as an example, Grove details how CEOs typically think when they start hearing from subordinates about competitive concerns. (Hint: Denial.)

My bottom line: This may be the most important business book...ever! If nothing else, it should be required reading for all serious investors and any corporate managers who wonder hope to avoid getting blindsided — and who wonder why sort-sellers are quite often first (albeit, early) to see a model implode.

Best part: While it was written in 1996, Grove’s book may be more relevant today than it was then.
