Citi at $20 Very Good Entry Point: Top Analyst

A year from now, Jeff Harte of Sandler O’Neill thinks you’ll be kicking yourself for not buying Citi and other banks.

“If Europe goes into a deep recession, all the financials will be troubled,” the top bank analyst admits during a live interview on CNBC’s Fast Money.

However O’Neill doesn't think the crisis plays out that way - not in the least.

“They have the ability to handle the crisis and they recognize the need, and so, I think ultimately they handle the crisis,” he says. "I believe we have a constructive, not a destructive outcome."

Of all the motivations, Harte thinks among the most powerful is the hit Germany would take if the EU broke apart and Germany returned to a strong Deutsche Mark. As an export driven economy, a very strong currency would be highly problematic for Germany.

And if Europe doesn't implode, then banks are cheap - especially US banks that have traded in tandem with their European counterparts.

“I think there could be big upside potential," Harte says. "I don’t know what happens in a week or in a month, he says, “but a year from now I think we say at current levels, Citi was a bargain. Same is true for Goldman Sachs.”

Top hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson told us the same thing back on June 1st. "Citigroup is trading at half of tangible book – Goldman is trading at a 25% discount to tangible book. It's just way too cheap,” Tilson said.

Trader Mike Murphy agrees. But he adds, "this is the kind of thing where you have to put the stocks in a drawer and not look at it for at least 12 months. In the short-term, they’ll still be very volatile.”
