CNBC's Scott Cohn and his team put together another great look at the Top States for Business 2012. But what are the top states for stocks? CNBC's By the Numbers did the number crunching for you.

It turns out the South is the place to be for high-flying stocks.

If you look at 1-year stock performance in the S&P 500 and sort by the state in which companies are headquartered, the top five states are strictly a Southern affair.

On the other end of the spectrum, Kansas has the worst stock performance of any state, thanks to Sprint’s 40 percent decline over the last year.
