Every Kid is Going to Want These 2 Toys: Pro

Monday, 16 Jul 2012 | 3:51 PM ET

If you’ve got kids, there’s a good chance we can tell you right now what they’re going to want once December rolls around.

Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter has been all over the hot toys and he tells us 2 toys look like they're going to be real standouts.

1. Schachter thinks Mattel is looking at monster sales into the holidays with its Monster High videos and games. Never heard of Monster High; it’s a line of dolls, games, books, merchandise and more inspired by monster moves.

Toy Wars: Christmas in July
Robert Carroll, UBS analyst, weighs in on the competition for this holiday season's hit toy.

According to the Mattel website Monster High is a school where the teenage children of famous monsters attend classes and endure the trials and tribulations of high school life, all while trying to be good students and good friends.

The perfectly imperfect guys and ghouls of Monster High don’t just feel like monsters from time to time—they really are. Rather than trying to fit it, they are encouraged by faculty members to: “Be yourself, be unique, be a monster."

2. Schachter tells us Hasbro also has a hit on its hands with its Nerf Night Vision line. On sale since last year, the line of products includes:

- Night vision goggles for see-in-the-dark fun
- A digital helmet cam that can be mounted on either a helmet or bike
- A pocket DVR with a preview screen
- 2.1 and 5.1 MP digital cameras packaged with social networking software

From Sakar International, produced under license from Hasbro the new lineup – evoking the look and feel of the iconic NERF brand – retails at prices from $19.99 to $59.99.

If you’re concerned about the slowing economy dragging down shares of Mattel and Hasbro Schachter tells us toys tend to be relatively recession resilient.

“Parents will cut back on themselves, way before they’ll cut back on their kids.”
