Amazon Announces Press Event—New Tablet Coming?

The event will be Sept. 6 at the event center Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., according to an e-mail sent to the press.

Amazon is hosting the event one week before the rumored date for Apple's next product launch, where it is expected to unveil the new iPhone and possibly a mini iPad.

While Amazon is expected to unveil new tablets in the next few months, it is unclear what the online retailer will announce at the event. The company is also rumored to release its own smartphone either this year or next.

In the past, the company has held press events related to the Kindle Fire in New York City. The venue where Amazon will host the event in September is a 35,000 square foot former airplane hangar at the Santa Monica Airport that is now used as an event center.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
