Word that FedEx is planning for a "surge volume" during September may lend credence to the rumor that Apple is planning to ship its expected new iPhone Sept. 21, according to a report.

MacRumors, a blog that cover all things Apple, claims it has received a FedEx memo that states the shipping company is preparing for a "surge volume event" between Sept. 21, which is the rumored ship date, and Sept. 24.

Appleannounced Tuesdaythat it would be hosting a press event Sept. 12, however, in usual fashion, the iPhone maker did not announce what it would be revealing. The illustration on the invitation, though, hinted that it might be the iPhone 5.

In August, TechCrunch reported that Verizon was planning staff vacation blackout dates Sept. 21 to Sept. 30, also hinting that Sept. 21 may be the official date consumers can get their hands on the anticipated device.

Apple, Verizon and FedEx did not respond immediately for request for comment.
