A pause in the bull market will give investors the chance to shift their portfolios for higher returns, Robert Pavlik of Banyan Partners said Monday on CNBC.

“Near-term, I think this market probably gives back a little bit of what we saw recently, but I think that’s going to be your opportunity — if you’re into more defensive, higher-dividend-yielding stocks — to get out and then start to rotate into the early cyclicals,” he said on “Fast Money.”

Positioning Your Portfolio for Long-Term Value
CNBC's Mary Thompson shares a preview of her interview with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney president Greg Fleming; and discussing just how long the market rally may last, and strategies for your investments, with Robert Pavlik, Banyan Partners.

Pavlik’s top picks include the following S&P 500 sectors: Energy, industrials materials, financial and technology.

Pavlik added that investors are going to need more clarity about Europe, earnings and the so-called “fiscal cliff,” which he thinks will be averted.

“It’s in nobody’s best interest to see a recession for 2013 and beyond, so you know that there’s going to be some kind of compromise being worked on,” he said.
