Better-than-expected earnings boosted Research In Motion stock in after-hours trading, but there’s not a lot of hope left for the BlackBerry maker, Evercore Partners analyst Mark McKechnie said Thursday on CNBC.

“I don’t think it gives you hope on BlackBerry 10 or that they’re going to turn it around. I think what you learned today, though, is that they are doing well in survival mode,” he said on “Fast Money.” “I think the Street was looking for a train wreck, and we got a fender-bender here.”

RIM Hinges on BlackBerry 10, Evercore Analyst Says
Bullish activity in Research In Motion stock might not last into next year, Evercore Partners analyst Mark McKechnie says.

Tightening supply in Apple iPhone 5 components could provide better margins for RIM, but Apple and Google Android smartphones are still positioned to do well in the long-run, McKechnie said.

But don’t expect the bounce to last, he added.

“I think things are going to get quite tough for them next year. The make-or-break is going to be the upgrade cycle for BlackBerry 10,” McKechnie said. “You’re going to have a tough time stealing an Apple subscriber or a Samsung, Google subscriber with a BlackBerry 10 product.”
