Check out which companies are making headlines after the bell Tuesday:

Murphy Oil - Hedge fund manager Dan Loeb's Third Point disclosed a 1.5 million stake in the energy company through the end of the second quarter, according to an amended 13-F filing with the SEC. Shares edged higher in extended-hours trading. (Click here for after-hours quote.)

Xyratex - The company posted earnings of 37 cents a share, excluding one-time items, on revenue of $276 million, missing expectations for 44 cents a share on sales of $316 million. In addition, the company handed in fourth-quarter guidance that disappointed. Shares plunged in extended-hours trading after being temporarily halted. (Click here for after-hours quote.)

Bernstein upgraded railroad stocks CSX and Norfolk Southern to "market perform" from "underperform." (Click here for after-hours quotes.)

Deutsche Bank initiates Brookdale Senior Living , Capital Senior Living , Emeritus , and Five Star Quality Care with a "buy" rating. (Click here for after-hours quotes.)
