Yahoo's mobile business stands to become a huge growth driver for the company, former interim CEO Ross Levinsohn said Wednesday on CNBC.

"Mobile is obviously going to be a tremendous catalyst in the future if Yahoo can get it right — not something Yahoo hasn't been working on," he said on "Fast Money."

"Video is crucial to the future of media, premium video in that respect," he added. "Premium content like CNBC is not replicable very easily, so I believe in things like that."

Levinsohn, who helmed Yahoo from May to July, also praised or his successor, CEO Marissa Mayer, and urged that it would take time for her impact to be fully realized.

"First of all, I think you have to give her time to decide what she wants to do. She's been very smart, I think, in being low-key about it and getting to understand the business, understand the people there, the opportunities around the world for that business," he said. "And she hasn't really said exactly what she wants to do."
