European Stocks to Watch


Here some of Monday's big movers on European stock markets: Akzo Nobel, Alliance Boots, ICI,Swisscom and DSG International.

Akzo Nobel (up 15.38%) Shares in Dutch chemical company Akzo Nobel jumped Monday after it agreed to sell its Organon BioSciences unit to Schering-Plough for 11 billion euros ($14.4 billion) in cash. 

Alliance Boots (up 7.37%) Alliance Boots surged 5.9% after the drugs retailer said at the weekend it would hold a board meeting to discuss a 9.7 billion-pound ($18.8 billion) takeover approach from private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts.

ICI (up 4.79%) Imperial Chemicals Industries shares soared more than 8% Monday on investor hopes the U.K.-based company will get a bid approach from Akzo Nobel's, which is flush with cash after the 11 billion euro ($14.4 billion) sale of the Dutch group's Organon division.

Swisscom (down 3.54%) Switzerland's largest telephone company, Swisscom, offered Monday to buy FastWeb for 3.7 billion euros ($4.9 billion) in cash to add a million broadband Internet customers in Italy as growth at home slows.

DSG International (down 3.42%) DSG International, the former Dixons, is at the top of the FTSE 100 loser board with shares down thanks to the profit taking following decent gains last week.
