CNBC to Host Special ‘Make Green Pay’ Debate

CNBC Europe

CNBC, First in Business Worldwide, is to host a green debate as part of the official agenda at this year’s World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos.

The debate, entitled Make Green Pay, will ask a distinguished panel of global business leaders why the global marketplace still has not found a sustainable mix which supports economic development without depleting the earth’s resources.  The panel will debate what will motivate the market and if we can make green pay – for the investor, for business and for the planet.

The debate will be hosted by CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo and will air in a special one hour programme on CNBC Europe on 26 January 2007 at 22.00 CET.  The programme will also air on CNBC Asia and CNBC in the US.

Members of the debating panel will include Sir Nicholas Stern, Head of Government Economic Service, HM Treasury; Robert Greifeld, President & CEO, NASDAQ and Daniel Esty, Director, Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy.

The panel will split into two teams who will argue if a free market solution is the right way to Make Green Pay, or if there should be a greater level of government intervention.  Specifically three motions will be debated:
• Nuclear energy and cleaner coals are the only viable alternatives to oil
• Market forces will prove superior to government intervention in leading corporations towards ‘greener’ operations
• A global carbon tax would do more harm than good.

Mick Buckley, President and CEO of CNBC Europe said, “We have been working closely with the World Economic Forum to bring together an influential panel of experts to debate a key global issue.  In addition to our CEO interviews and analysis from Davos, this special programme enables us to provide in-depth discussion and analysis into an area that impacts us all.”

The Make Green Pay special programme is sponsored by BT Global Services, who will run adjacent advertising spots around the programme.  In addition branded vignettes with interview excerpts from the debate will also air on CNBC Europe.
