Warren Buffett Gets #5 Power Ranking from Vanity Fair

Warren Buffett is #5 on the just-released Vanity Fair 100 list, the magazine's annual "power ranking."  That's up one slot from last year's #6 ranking, dislodging his good friend Bill Gates.

The ranking appears in the new October issue which features, inexplicably, Nicole Kidman on the cover rather than Mr. Buffett.  (What were the editors thinking!)

A paragraph accompanying the list on Vanity Fair's website notes that Mr. Buffett has "finally unveiled his plans to name a successor" by narrowing down "thousands of contestants in an American Idol-like runoff."  (Will we be seeing Ryan, Simon, Paula and Randy in Omaha?)

Finishing ahead of Mr. Buffett on the list are:

  • Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. (#1 last year)
  • Steve Jobs, Apple, Disney, Pixar (#3 last year)
  • Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Google (#2 last year)
  • Stephen Schwarzman and Pete Peterson, The Blackstone Group (#34 last year)

Just behind Warren:

  • Bill Clinton (#7 last year)
  • Steven Spielberg (#10 last year)
  • Bernard Arnault, LVMH (#19 last year)
  • Michael Bloomberg, New York City mayor (#36 last year)
  • Bill and Melinda Gates (#5 last year)

All in all, not bad company to be in.
