There is nothing quite like a Manolo Blahnik shoe or is there? In today's consumer market, fashion sense is taking a back seat to common sense.
From clothing to laptops, all this week we've told you about how the American consumer is no longer looking for the best. They just want “good enough.”
For example, over the past 12 months, shares of Saks(SKS) and Nordstrom(JWN) are down over 30%. But Costco(COST) and Wal-Mart (WMT) are posting double digit returns. So, we end our series with the biggest winners of all from this trend; the big, ugly, warehouse-like, pure retailing experiences that are the club stores.
As the Costco shopper loads up on a lifetime supply of soup, they can also grab a big screen TV or a digital camera made by a lesser known company. These products typically retail for about 25% less than the name brands, but with no noticeable drop-off in quality.
The market is telling us we are a now “good enough” nation. How can you trade along?
I think the best trade is Coscto (COST), says Jeff Macke. Also look at Wal-Mart (WMT) and BJ’s Wholesale Club (BJ) as people buy in bulk.
I agree says Karen Finerman.
Here’s Macke’s “Good Enough” basket; Costco, Corning, Wal-Mart, Hewlett-Packard and BJ’s Wholesale Club. This basket is comprised of trades Jeff Macke introduced during this special series over the past 3 days. “I think if you make this basket, you’d win over the year,” he counsels.
