Following are the day’s biggest winners and losers. Find out why shares of China Mobile and VeriFone popped while eBay and Royal Bank Of Scotland dropped.
POPS (stocks that jumped higher)
Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ) popped 7%. A published report suggest that Bill Gates and Warren Buffett visited Alberta’s oil-sands mine, with “investment in mind.” – I think Suncor is the play, counsels Joe Terranova.
VeriFone (PAY) popped 32%. The biggest maker of electronic-payment equipment popped the most in its 3 years after resolving an accounting fiasco that had tarnished the company’s image. – It’s a nice pop for now, says Pete Najarian.
Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) popped 6%. The Grand Theft Auto publisher cleared any anti-trust issues with a possible Electronic Arts merger. – I’d sell Take Two, says Jeff Macke.
Hansen Natural (HANS) popped 8%. Billionaire Nelson Peltz and his Trian hedge-fund group increased their position. – Peltz did a nice job with Snapple, muses Guy Adami. There’s something here but I don’t know what.
San Juan Basin Royalty (SJT) popped 7%. The express trust popped after announcing it will pay a monthly dividend. – If you’re looking for nat gas exposure look elsewhere, says Joe Terranova. It’s a dividend play.
Mentor Graphics (MENT) popped 10%. The maker of electronic design automation systems, said Wednesday it expects revenue this year to grow by 4 percent, to $915 million.
China Mobile (CHL) popped 5%. The stock jumped on speculation the Chinese government will introduce measures to spur growth in the economy.
DROPS (stocks that slid lower)
eBay (EBAY) dropped 2%. The world’s largest online auctioneer slashed listing fees to attract new sellers and compete with Amazon’s fixed price marketplace. – The company is Amazon’s weak little sister, says Jeff Macke.
BJ’s Wholesale Club (BJ) dropped 7%. Despite a slight rise in earnings and revenues, BJ's Wholesale Club couldn't please investors on Wednesday as they worried that the company will drive customers away when it raises prices. – It could be a buying opportunity, says Jeff Macke.
Analog Devices (ADI) dropped 9%. The maker of semiconductors for companies like Cisco reported profits and sales below analysts’ estimates. – I wouldn’t go near it, says Guy Adami.
Royal Bank Of Scotland (RBS) dropped 3%. The UK’s second-largest bank struggles to find buyers for its insurance operations. – I would not touch this stock, counsels Joe Terranova. It looks as if the UK has a worse housing crisis than we do.
Novatel Wireless (NVTL) dropped 25%. Analysts at Morgan Joseph downgraded the company from "buy" to "hold," while reducing their estimates for the company. – Ouch, exclaims Pete Najarian.
