As Barack Obama dashes to the 100-day mark, there’s no denying that his presidency has brought about change at a dizzying rate. And a corner stone of that change lies in his energy policies.
"The nation that leads the world in creating new energy sources will be the nation that leads the 21st century global economy. America can be that nation," says Obama.
The energy overhaul has many facets including a cap and trade system where businesses would buy and sell credits to emit greenhouse gases, making polluting less profitable but possibly raising oil prices for consumers.
Also, Obama hopes to allocate $15 billion a year to develop renewable energy and make old energy sources like coal burn cleaner.
And then there’s tax credits for plug-ins cars which could give hybrid automakers a much needed boost in sales.
Considering there’s so much coming, forget the first 100 days -- what’s the energy trade on the next 1,300?
I’d keep an eye on URS, says the Negotiator. It’s rich right now, but if it pulls back to mid-$30’s, it’s a buy.
I don’t think alternative energy gains traction until oil gets very expensive again, muses the Chairwoman. If you're bullish on alternative energy then my play is long oil.
With oil trading around $50, I'd buy calls in national apathy, bristles the Wolf.
I’d look at McDermott, Fluor as well as American Superconductor, adds the Pit Boss.
