Carmen: We Need a Healthcare Solution

I wonder how many bloviators who blast Obama’s healthcare plan have actually—even once in their lives—paid for their own healthcare coverage or had to have treatment without coverage.  After all it’s easy to talk about how expensive, socialist, limiting, etc., etc., it all is if you’re not one of the millions of Americans who have filed for bankruptcy due to medical bills.  Or the silent sufferers who’ve had to live a much lower quality of life because they’re trying to manage their medical bills without filing bankruptcy.

When was the last time you paid for health insurance coverage for yourself and your family on an average American salary?  Well, I’ve been there, done that, and I can tell you that paying for COBRA (before the subsidy) and then a group rate for health insurance out of my family’s pocket—can nearly break a budget even when everyone is healthy.  And please don’t tell me that only several million folks are uninsured at any time because the majority of people who declare bankruptcy due to medical debt have insurance!

We need a solution.  We need the cost of coverage and the cost of care to go down.  And if you’re scared of turning our healthcare system over into something more—oh let’s say—pink, think about how we’re turning into a freelance nation.  Companies cannot afford to give benefits anymore.  The number of uninsured and underinsured will continue to grow while the American Dream for many disappears as they’re priced out of living a good life because they, or a loved one, hadthe bad luck of getting sick.
