Pops & Drops: Electronic Arts, Starbucks...


Following are the day’s biggest winners and losers. Find out why shares of H&R Block and Electronic Arts popped while Starbucks and CBS dropped.

POPS (stocks that jumped higher)

H&R Block (HRB) popped 10%. Fourth quarter profits rose 30%, beating expectations. - I think it goes to $18.50 counsels Guy Adami.

Apollo Group (APOL) popped 7%. The firm beat on third quarter earnings and increased its share buyback. - I think this and other education stocks go higher, speculates Joe Terranova.

Stock Pops & Drops

Lear (LEA) popped 9%. The maker of auto seats rose after Ford said June could be the auto industry’s best month since last fall. - To call it a pop doesn't do service to the word pop, chuckles Karen Finerman. The stock is now around 50 cents.

Electronic Arts (ERTS) popped 4%. BofA-Merrill Lynch upgraded the stock to ‘buy’ from ‘hold’, citing strong sales from Sims 3 and other titles.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) popped 4%. Investors bid the stock higher on speculation that Apple might switch to chips made by this firm.

DROPS (stocks that slid lower)

Starbucks (SBUX) dropped 5%. NPD Group said specialty coffee sales fell 13% in the second quarter. - I'm starting to like this stock, reveals Pete Najarian.

Manitowoc (MTW) dropped 3%. Doubts about the speed of the economic recovery dragged down many stocks including this one.

CBS Corp (CBS) dropped 4%. Jefferies cuts estimates on the firm, saying the company will most likely miss ‘09 earnings due to continued weakness in advertising.
