If you’re looking for a unique piece of real estate, 5040 South Greenwood Avenue in Chicago comes with one rare amenity: the lot is adjacent to President Obama’s private Illinois residence.
The home, which is being sold by the Matt Garris Group, a component of Coldwell Banker, will go through a sales process over the next six weeks, during which potential buyers will be reviewed to ensure they are financially capable of purchasing the home. Final sale, however, is pending a secret service background check. Currently, the owner is offering the property for sale without a determined price tag.

Descibed by the sellers as “one of the most prestigious addresses in the United States,” the home is located in the Kenwood/Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, an area that is home to the city’s business, political and intellectual elite. The home for sale is on the right.
In 2005, then-Illinois State Senator Barack Obama moved in next door, and within 3 years ascended to the US Presidency. President Obama's home is pictured on the left.
Built in 1906 by A.R. Clark, the home was later used to house officers during World War II who needed to stay in the area, eventually becoming a boarding house for a small military school. The current residents purchased the home from the colonel who ran the school.
The interior of the home measures approximately 6000 square feet, with an adjacent coach house, spanning over three standard Chicago lots. The total land measures 12,000 square feet.
The residence is over 100 years old, and although the realtors admit it requires some renovation, the building features many turn-of-the-century details, including “spacious dimensions, preserved woodwork and plaster detail and ornate original stained glass windows,” according to the realtors.
The home was also used in President Obama’s campaign, when during the Iowa primary the President-to-be filmed a Christmas television commercial in front of the living room fireplace of the home.
The main level of the house includes a large living room (27'x17') facing the front of the home and a dining room measuring 22’x20’. The front of the home also features a porch which wraps around to the front entrance.
The current floor plan of the home lists eight bedrooms, three full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, and a kitchen measuring 12’x19’. The home also features a “grand staircase” and several ornate fireplaces. There are two additonal stories not pictured. To see the complete floor plan, click here.
The lower level of the home is described as “massive,” referring to the spacious construction of the rooms, which include a 16'x 31' utility room, a 24'x 17' storage room and 5 other additional rooms. Also included on the property is an adjacent coach house, pictured here.
