Markets Salute the Troops on Veteran's Day

Historically and on average, the U.S Markets have been up about 58% of the time or more on the day of Veterans' Day and slightly down a week after. The S&P has averaged best of the major indices on the day of Veterans' Day, up an average of 0.1% and up 64% of the time.
Here is a look at the major indices performance on Veterans' Day, 1 week Later, and 1 month after we pay tribute to the men and women that serve our country...

Dow since 1900:

  • Day of Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of  0.07%
    o Up 58% of the time when it gained an avg. of 0.92% , down 42% of the time when it fell an avg. -1.13% 
    o Biggest gain 3.8% in 1932  
    o Biggest drop -6.8% in 1929
  • 1 Week  after Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of 0.09%
    o Up 58% of the time when it gained an avg. of 1.7% , down 42% of the time when it fell an avg. -2.2% 
    o Biggest gain  5.84% in 1930    
    o Biggest drop -9.21% in 1931
  • 1 Month after Veterans’ Day:
    o Avg. gain of 0.38%
    o Up 60% of the time when it gained an avg. of 3.2%, down 40% of the time when it fell an avg. -3.9%

Leading the Dow higher today are: Boeing , McDonald's, American Express , Wal-Mart , and Travelers . 

In addition, leading the S&P to the upside are predominantly home builders such as Pulte Homes , KB Home, and Lennar .
